The city (often a stand-in for Sarajevo, Belgrade, or Zagreb) is a character in itself. It is a city that remembers every war, every betrayal. The sweet soul tries to escape, but the city’s gravitational pull is that of a grave. This topophobia is unique to Balkan post-war literature and is central to any serious analysis.
