The story begins with Hitohito Tadano, an ordinary high school student who sits next to Shouko Komi, the most popular girl in school. Unbeknownst to everyone, Komi suffers from extreme social anxiety and communication difficulties, which make it challenging for her to interact with others. When Tadano discovers that Komi is not as confident as she appears, he befriends her and promises to help her overcome her social phobia by setting a goal of having 100 friends.
